Aramco Spot Crude for Europe: Why Saudi Pricing Now Puts Market Share First

Aramco spot crude is back in Europe at a discount, and Asia got the widest OSP cut since 2020. Saudi pricing now aims to win back buyers, not to ration oil.

Aramco spot crude is back on offer to European refiners. Bloomberg reported on 27 October that the Saudi company offered late-October cargoes at a discount to its official selling price (OSP). It then added more cargoes for November. Only weeks earlier, it had told the same refiners they would get no October term oil at all.

In short, Aramco spot crude has turned a shortage into a sales drive. This analysis reads what Aramco’s prices say about Saudi supply, and what that means for the oil market.

From rationing to selling

First, the reason for the U-turn. An attack shut the East-West pipeline, which carries crude to Yanbu on the Red Sea. Now the line is running again. As a result, Aramco has told European buyers they will get their full November term volumes. Moreover, it lets them lift spot cargoes at Yanbu or at Sidi Kerir in Egypt.

At the same time, output has recovered fast. Saudi production rose by a third in September to over 8mmbbl/d, from the lowest level in more than three decades in August. That puts August at about 6mmbbl/d, on our estimate. Saudi Arabia normally ships 0.7-0.8mmbbl/d of crude to Europe.

What Aramco spot crude pricing tells us

The price list tells the same story. For November, Aramco raised its Arab Light OSP for northwest Europe by $3 to $0.85 above ICE Brent. Yet it is still selling October Aramco spot crude below its OSP. In other words, the list price went up, while the price it actually achieves went down.

Asia shows this more clearly. In fact, Aramco cut its November Arab Light OSP for Asia by $3 to $5.00 below Oman/Dubai. That is the widest discount since June 2020, Reuters data show. Moreover, the cut came against expectations of a rise of up to $5.

Aramco spot crude and freight: VLCC rates from the Gulf to China at $1.2mn a day against ~$80,000 a year earlier

Freight explains much of it. A supertanker from the Gulf to China cost $1.2mn a day on a time charter in early October, LSEG data show. A year earlier, it cost about $80,000. Therefore, Aramco is absorbing part of the freight bill to keep its buyers, Asian refiners said.

Why Aramco spot crude matters for prices

In our view, discounted Aramco spot crude shows a seller that is not short of oil. Traders told Bloomberg that the extra Saudi supply has already lowered prices for some European grades this week. Meanwhile, the UAE pumped at a record high, the IEA said, while Iraqi exports neared pre-war levels.

Even so, front-month Brent futures (the December contract) still closed at $113.88 on 27 October. The gap between physical discounts and a high futures price is the risk premium for new attacks. For how fragile the pipeline route is, see our analysis of the East-West pipeline.

What to watch next

  • The OPEC+ meeting on 1 November, where seven core members look set to keep December targets unchanged.
  • Aramco’s December OSPs, due in early November, for a further cut to Asia.
  • VLCC freight rates, which decide how much discount buyers need.
