Refining has overtaken oil production at America’s two biggest oil companies. On 30 October 2026, ExxonMobil and Chevron reported third-quarter profits that beat forecasts, driven by record runs at their US refineries. ExxonMobil’s adjusted earnings reached $17.5bn and Chevron’s $10.4bn. Yet neither company raised its share buybacks.
This analysis looks at how much refining contributed, where the cash went, and how the two compare with Europe’s majors.
Refining carried ExxonMobil and Chevron in Q3 2026
ExxonMobil’s Energy Products unit earned $9.05bn on an adjusted basis in Q3 2026, against $7.31bn from upstream. That makes refining ~52% of group adjusted earnings, on our estimate. Reuters said it was the first time in at least six years that ExxonMobil earned more from refining than from production. Its US Gulf Coast refineries ran at 100% crude unit utilisation.
Similarly, Chevron’s adjusted downstream earnings reached $4.94bn, or ~48% of the group total. A year earlier, downstream made just $1.1bn. Its US refineries processed a record 1.09mmbbl/d at nearly 98% utilisation. By contrast, upstream weakened. ExxonMobil’s adjusted upstream profit fell 20% from Q2 2026, on lower prices and Guyana entitlement effects.
Where the cash went: debt first
Cash flow was huge. ExxonMobil generated $25.7bn from operations and $19.1bn of free cash flow. It paid $4.3bn in dividends and $5.1bn in buybacks, ~37% of operating cash flow in total. Meanwhile, Chevron made $16.0bn from operations, paid $3.48bn in dividends and bought back $2.50bn of shares.
However, the buybacks did not grow with profits. Chevron’s Q3 2026 repurchases were slightly below the $2.57bn of Q3 2025, even though its earnings nearly tripled. Over nine months, its buybacks fell to $8.19bn from $9.23bn. ExxonMobil held its pace and set $20bn again for 2027, the same as in the previous two years.

Instead, ExxonMobil and Chevron both cut debt. Chevron’s net debt fell from $34.5bn at the end of 2025 to $20.7bn on 30 September 2026. ExxonMobil cut net debt by nearly $11bn this year, to $22.1bn. Together, that is close to $25bn of balance-sheet repair in nine months, on our estimate. “We think in decades, not quarters,” Chevron finance chief Eimear Bonner told Reuters.
How ExxonMobil and Chevron compare with Europe’s majors
Q3 2026 buybacks equal ~20% of ExxonMobil’s operating cash flow and 16% of Chevron’s. That is close to TotalEnergies at ~20% and below Shell at ~24%, based on their latest quarterly programmes. So the US pair are not more generous with the windfall; see our analysis of the European oil majors. Rather, they are more cautious about how long it lasts.
That caution looks sensible. “Margins will stay a bit elevated, maybe into next year,” Chevron vice chairman Mark Nelson told analysts. In other words, management does not expect the windfall to last. Independent refiners face the same question, as our analysis of US refining margins showed.
What the timing effects hide
Reported profits also understate the quarter. Rising prices late in Q3 2026 created negative timing effects of $2.54bn at ExxonMobil and $1.58bn at Chevron. These mostly reflect derivatives marked to market before the oil is delivered. ExxonMobil says such effects unwind in later periods. Therefore, ~$4.1bn could flow back into earnings in Q4 2026 if prices hold, on our estimate.
