Reliance Industries has picked VA Tech Wabag to build a Reliance Jamnagar desalination plant. The water company disclosed the order in a filing on Tuesday. Wabag classes the order as “mega”, meaning it is worth over INR10bn ($105mn).

What the Reliance Jamnagar desalination plant includes

The seawater plant will treat 8,400 m3/hr at first. Later, it can expand to 12,600 m3/hr, or 302 MLD. In addition, Wabag will build a 3,000 m3/hr remineralisation plant. The work will run in phases over 25 months, CNBC-TV18 reported.

Wabag will design, supply, install and commission the plant. It will then run a performance test before handover.

Why it matters

Jamnagar is home to Reliance’s big refining complex and its green energy giga complex. So, a large and steady water supply supports both. This is also Wabag’s second Reliance order in two months. On September 7, it won a “medium” order, worth INR1-2.5bn ($11-26mn). That one covers an effluent plant at the green energy giga complex.

As a result, Wabag shares rose 8.4% on Tuesday. For more on Jamnagar, read our report on Reliance’s US partnerships.
