QatarEnergy US LNG Deals: Why the Biggest Exporter Is Buying 7 mtpa as a Hormuz Hedge

QatarEnergy US LNG deals with Woodside and Cheniere add 7 mtpa in two weeks. The volumes hedge the next Hormuz closure, not the current Qatar outage.

QatarEnergy US LNG buying has moved from a one-off to a strategy. On 29 October 2026, the world’s largest LNG exporter agreed to buy 3 mtpa from Woodside’s Louisiana LNG for 20 years. A week earlier, it signed for up to 4 mtpa from Cheniere. Chief executive Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi told Reuters that “there’s more to come”.

This analysis looks at why Qatar is buying gas it could produce itself, what the volumes are worth, and what they cannot do.

Why QatarEnergy is buying US LNG

The reason is the Strait of Hormuz. All of Qatar’s exports pass through it, and Qatar supplies about a fifth of the world’s LNG. Since early March 2026, those exports have largely stopped. QatarEnergy said in March 2026 that the damage to Ras Laffan would cost about $20bn a year in lost revenue.

Therefore, the US cargoes work like an insurance policy. If Hormuz closes again, gas prices would spike, as they have this year. QatarEnergy would then sell US LNG at those prices instead of losing all its income. Indeed, Al-Kaabi called a closure “the true contingency that we’re looking to have”. Moreover, the deals need no capital spending, unlike pipelines or new trains.

How big the QatarEnergy US LNG hedge is

The 7 mtpa signed so far equals about 9% of Ras Laffan’s 77 mtpa capacity, on our estimate. It also covers about 55% of the 12.8 mtpa in the two trains damaged in March 2026. If the Venture Global talks for about 3 mtpa succeed, the total would reach 10 mtpa. Al-Kaabi said the target is “much higher” than 7 mtpa.

The margin can be large. Europe’s TTF benchmark rose above €95/MWh this week, or about $32/MMBtu at $1.15 per euro. By contrast, US gas prices are far lower, and Al-Kaabi said the gap between them is the arbitrage. Meanwhile, Cheniere raised its 2026 EBITDA guidance to $8.75-9.25bn as Gulf disruption lifted demand for US cargoes.

What the QatarEnergy US LNG deals cannot do

However, the hedge does not help today’s buyers. Woodside’s deliveries start in 2030 and Cheniere’s in 2031. By then, Qatar expects to have repaired its damaged trains, which Al-Kaabi says will take about three years. In addition, the US volumes cannot back up Qatar’s long-term customers. Those contracts are point-to-point, from named terminals to named destinations.

In our view, the deals change QatarEnergy from a producer into a portfolio player, like Shell or TotalEnergies. Its fleet of about 200 LNG tankers and its trading arm make that possible. For buyers in South Asia, though, the shortfall this winter remains; see our analysis of the Qatar LNG supply gap.

What to watch next

  • A Venture Global deal, which Al-Kaabi expects among more 20- to 25-year agreements before the end of 2026.
  • The first North Field train, due in the first quarter of 2027 if a US-Iran peace deal is in place.
  • QatarEnergy’s force majeure notices for January 2027.
