Chevron Q3 results beat forecasts on Friday 30 October 2026, as record runs at its US refineries lifted profits. The company earned $9.9bn, or $5.06 per share, in the third quarter of 2026. That was nearly triple the $3.5bn of a year earlier. Adjusted earnings came to $10.4bn, or $5.28 per share. Analysts polled by LSEG had expected $4.89.

Revenue reached $67.8bn, well above the $61.6bn expected. As a result, Chevron shares touched an all-time high, CNBC reported. “The system is under stress,” chief executive Mike Wirth told CNBC. “We remain in an environment that is fairly fragile.”

Refining drives the Chevron Q3 results

Downstream earnings surged more than 300% to $4.9bn, from $1.1bn a year earlier. Moreover, Chevron’s US refineries processed a record 1.09mn b/d of crude. They ran at about 98% of capacity. According to Wirth, diesel and jet fuel yields rose more than 10%.

Upstream earnings rose 70% to $5.7bn. However, they were down from the second quarter of 2026, because of lower prices, lower liftings and timing effects. Overall, unfavourable timing effects cut earnings by $1.58bn as prices rose late in the quarter.

The result included some one-off charges. Among them were a $160mn legal reserve, a $110mn impairment and $24mn of pension settlement costs. In addition, currency effects reduced earnings by $143mn.

Production dips on the Middle East

Chevron produced 3.98 mmboe/d in the quarter. That was slightly lower than a year ago. Higher prices reduced its entitlement volumes, and the Middle East conflict hit output. On the other hand, US production is up 27% from two years ago. Australia also set records, and Venezuela added one month of production after an accounting change.

The Chevron Q3 results also showed a return on capital employed of 18%. Meanwhile, the company said it expanded acreage in Venezuela and is improving the competitiveness of its Bakken assets.

Chevron Q3 results: cash, debt and dividend

Cash flow from operations was $16.0bn, or $16.6bn before working capital. Adjusted free cash flow reached $14.2bn. That figure included a $1bn loan repayment from Tengizchevroil in Kazakhstan, plus asset sales.

Chevron cut total debt by $3.5bn and grew its cash by more than $4bn. Consequently, net debt fell to 0.4 times cash flow. The company also declared a quarterly dividend of $1.78 per share. In addition, finance chief Eimear Bonner said full-year capital spending would finish at the low end of guidance.

Margins to stay high for now

Executives expect the refining windfall behind the Chevron Q3 results to fade only slowly. “Margins will stay a bit elevated, maybe into next year,” vice chairman Mark Nelson told analysts, Reuters reported. Damaged refineries in Russia and the Middle East will take time to repair.

The pattern matches its rival. ExxonMobil Q3 2026 results also showed refining profits rivalling upstream. Earlier this week, our analysis explained why Valero made $39 a barrel on the same trend.

What comes next

After the Chevron Q3 results, the company plans to raise its exploration budget by 50% on 2025 levels. It has made 15 infrastructure-led discoveries over the last two years. Investors will also watch fourth-quarter 2026 spending, which the company expects to rise from the third quarter.
