ExxonMobil reported third-quarter 2026 earnings of $15.4bn, or $3.72 a share, on 30 October 2026. That was up 6% on the second quarter of 2026 and more than double the $7.55bn it earned in Q3 2025. Adjusted earnings, which leave out identified items and timing effects, were $17.5bn ($4.23 a share), up 19% on the quarter.

Refining did the heavy lifting. Energy Products earned $9.05bn on an adjusted basis, more than double its Q2 2026 result and more than Upstream ($7.31bn) for the quarter, as Brent averaged $97.01/bbl, down from $104.52/bbl in Q2 2026.

Cash flow from operations was $25.7bn and free cash flow $19.1bn. ExxonMobil paid out $9.4bn to shareholders in the quarter and used much of the rest to cut debt: net debt fell to $22.1bn at 30 September 2026, nearly $11bn lower so far this year. It also announced $20bn of share buybacks for 2027.

Looking ahead, ExxonMobil has declared a Q4 2026 dividend of $1.07 a share, payable on 10 December 2026, and plans $20bn of share buybacks in 2027. The release gives no numerical production or capex guidance for Q4 2026.

This was a refining quarter for ExxonMobil. With Brent lower than in Q2 2026, upstream earnings fell, but the downstream gain was larger, so adjusted profit still rose by almost a fifth. The cash is going first to the balance sheet: net debt is down by nearly $11bn this year, while buybacks of $5.1bn in the quarter stayed well below free cash flow of $19.1bn. The $20bn buyback plan for 2027 sets the pace for next year; whether refining margins hold at these levels is the main swing factor for Q4 2026.
