The refining quarter: Q3 2026 earnings and cash-allocation preview for seven oil majors

Brent fell in Q3 2026 while refining margins hit records. Our preview shows which majors gain, which lose, and where buybacks go next.

By Entelera Research

Summary

Brent fell in the third quarter of 2026, but most of the oil majors’ Q3 results will not follow it down. Refining margins, not crude prices, will decide who beats and who misses when ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, BP, TotalEnergies, Eni and ConocoPhillips report between 23 October and 5 November.

The preview is built from what the companies and the US Energy Information Administration have published: Q2 filings, pre-results trading statements, earnings-factor disclosures, price sensitivities and EIA daily prices to 20 October. This edition also includes Eni’s reported Q3 results of 23 October. It uses no broker notes or paywalled data. Every number is traced to one of 39 numbered sources.

Headline findings

  • Q3 is a refining quarter. Every company refining-margin indicator we track rose sharply between Q2 and Q3, far more than Brent fell. For the integrated majors, the margin gain outweighs the crude-price drag.
  • Winners and laggards are already visible. Published disclosures let us quantify the Q3 change for five of the seven. Three enter results day with clear tailwinds. The upstream-only company and one large US integrated face a harder comparison.
  • The windfall is going to balance sheets, not buybacks. In Q2 the seven returned less than a third of their operating cash flow to shareholders. One company is now guiding net debt into its long-term target range more than a year early.
  • Cash-return decisions are the real catalyst. We name the company with the strongest case to restart buybacks. Eni, first to report, declared the season’s first extraordinary dividend, €0.46 ($0.53) a share, ~€1.3bn (~$1.5bn), at the top of our pre-results range, and raised its 2026 buyback to €3.8bn ($4.37bn). Euro amounts are converted at Eni’s Q3 average EUR/USD rate of 1.151.
  • October redrew the refining map, then partly reversed it. The Brent–WTI spread blew out in early October and narrowed again by 20 October. Q4 refining results will depend on where each company buys its crude. The EIA’s 2027 outlook points to a large inventory build.
