Telangana is scaling up rooftop solar, targeting 20.33 lakh households with a combined capacity of 4,066 MW under a Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA) model run by the Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TGREDCO). The goal is to lower household power bills and expand clean energy.

The state approved the ULA programme on November 15, 2025, linking it to its Gruha Jyothi scheme. Within the area served by the Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company (TGSPDCL), 10,11,533 households have been identified, with a target of 2,023 MW. The Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has given in-principle approval for 20,175 installations in the first phase.

For rural areas, the government has sanctioned Rs 943.47 crore. This includes Rs 306.66 crore for 40,349 household rooftop systems totalling 80,698 kWp across 80 villages, and Rs 636.81 crore to convert 16,805 farm pump sets to solar, totalling 1,26,038 kWp.

Progress so far is significant. As of October 9, 2026, TGSPDCL recorded 79,976 registrations and 62,818 installations across its solar programmes, with a combined 831.872 MW. Under PM Surya Ghar, 29,816 systems totalling 125.613 MW have been installed, and the net-metering category has 29,777 installations totalling 640.852 MW.

TGSPDCL is urging households to use the central PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which offers up to Rs 78,000 for a 3 kW system: Rs 30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and Rs 18,000 for the third. The utility has simplified the process by exempting systems up to 10 kW from technical feasibility studies and waiving application fees for eligible applications filed between June 22, 2026 and March 31, 2027.

What to watch: how quickly the ULA programme moves from identified households to actual installations.
